Ningis a social networking site similar to Facebook and Blogger in that it allow users to blog, add videos, audio, pictures and music and share it with others. Ning is more like Bloggerbut it has some limitations that you don't find with other sites.
Advantages of the tool
Ning is effective and it also enhances the learning process. If used correctly Ning can be an excellent resource for sharing information both as a teacher and a student. As a foreign language teacher I found examples of ways i could use youtube videos to teach my students Spanish/French. Although, the videos are targeted more towards younger children I think the idea is good. The videos would be an interesting way to learn certain subjects. Ning also allow comment so my students would be able to give me feedback on the videos. I could use their comments to make any necessary changes.
Disadvantages (limitations) of the tool
Ning only allows you to use 10GB of storage and 100GB of bandwidth. After using your limit you have to buy more so cost may limit user who have a large fanbase. Paying for the service is definitely a disadvantage. For this reason, other social networking sites may be more efficient. Ning is valuable as long as you are within the restraints that they have set.
Application of the tool in your subject area
Think of one example of integrating the tool in teaching your subject area.
What will the teacher be doing? What will students be doing?
I would use this tool as a way for me and my students to share and comment on videos that would be beneficial to the language learning process. I would post videos similar to those in the example above that i think would benefit my students and allow them to give their opinion on whether or not the video(s) were helpful.
